About

A quiet place to talk

Nook is a group calling app for people who want their calls to feel calm and focused: a small set of tools that work well, honest about what they do, and yours to run.

Why Nook exists

Most calls don’t need much. A link that works, a clear picture of who’s talking, a way to keep the room in order and to plan the next one. Nook tries to do those things well and leave the rest out.

What we hold on to

  • Calm

Quiet surfaces, short motion and color that means something. The call stays out of the way of the conversation.

  • Honest

No fake numbers, no invented customers and no claims the software can’t back up. If something isn’t configured, Nook says so.

  • Accessible

Keyboard and screen-reader friendly, readable contrast, reduced motion respected and room for every language.

  • Private by default

Optional cookies stay off until you agree. No advertising, no third-party analytics, no recording.

  • No lock-in

Run Nook on your own server, with your own database and media server. Export your data whenever you like.

What’s included today

  • Video, audio, open-room and stage calls in the browser, with gallery and speaker views
  • A pre-join screen to check camera, microphone and speakers
  • Host tools: waiting room, lock, mute, remove, lower hands, end for everyone
  • Chat, reactions, raised hands and screen sharing
  • Scheduling with time zones, recurring meetings, invites and reminders
  • Simulation rooms with deterministic, clearly-labelled simulated participants
  • Data export, account deletion and granular cookie choices

What Nook deliberately doesn’t do

Some things are left out on purpose. Knowing them helps you decide whether Nook fits.

  • No recording

Calls aren’t recorded or stored. What’s said in a call stays in the call.

  • No tracking or ads

No advertising cookies, no third-party analytics and no selling of data.

  • No end-to-end encryption claim

Media is encrypted in transit, but the media server processes it. We say so plainly rather than promise more.

Who runs this server

Nook is software that anyone can run. Each server is run by its own operator, who is responsible for it and for your data on it.

This instance hasn’t published operator details yet.

The operator can add them with the NOOK_OPERATOR_* settings described in the self-hosting guide.

See it for yourself

The simulation room is open to everyone, no account needed.
