Cookie Policy

Nook uses a small number of its own cookies and browser storage keys. None of them are for advertising or tracking. This page lists all of them and explains how your choices work.

Project template — to be reviewed before publication

This document describes how the Nook software works. Whoever runs this installation (the operator) must review it, complete it and adapt it to their jurisdiction before relying on it. It is not legal advice.

Still to complete in this document:

  • Privacy contact email — set NOOK_PRIVACY_EMAIL on the server

Cookies and browser storage

Cookies are small text files that a website asks your browser to keep and send back on later visits. Browser storage (localStorage and sessionStorage) works in a similar way but stays in your browser and is not sent to the server.

This policy covers both. It is part of the Privacy Policy, and words such as “Service” have the meaning given in the Terms of Service.

Our approach

  • All cookies are set by the Service itself. There are no advertising cookies and no third-party analytics.
  • Fonts are served by the Service, so your browser doesn’t contact font providers.
  • Optional categories stay off until you accept them.

Categories

  • Necessary — needed for signing in, joining calls and remembering the choices you make on this page. These are always on.
  • Preferences — optional. They remember settings such as your device-detected language, time zone, theme and camera and microphone choices between visits.
  • Diagnostics — optional. Not a cookie of its own: it allows the app to send anonymous call-quality summaries to this server.

Full list

  • nook_session, or __Host-nook_session on HTTPS

    Necessary
    Purpose
Keeps you signed in. Holds a random token; the server stores only its hash.
    Duration
30 days, renewed each time you use the Service
  • nook_guest

    Necessary
    Purpose
Recognizes you as the same guest during a call when you join without an account.
    Duration
    Until you close your browser
  • nook_consent

    Necessary
    Purpose
    Remembers your cookie choices.
    Duration
    180 days
  • nook_locale

    Necessary
    Purpose
Remembers a language you picked yourself.
    Duration
    1 year
  • nook_locale_detected

    Preferences
    Purpose
Remembers the language detected from your device.
    Duration
1 year with consent; otherwise until you close your browser
  • nook_tz

    Preferences
    Purpose
Remembers the time zone detected from your device, so times are shown correctly before you sign in.
    Duration
1 year with consent; otherwise until you close your browser
  • nook_theme

    Preferences
    Purpose
Remembers the light or dark theme you chose while signed out.
    Duration
    1 year
  • localStorage and sessionStorage keys starting with nook:

    Preferences
    Purpose
Remember your camera and microphone, call layout and the mascot’s recent appearances.
    Duration
With consent, until you clear them; otherwise only for the current tab (sessionStorage)
  • Diagnostics (no cookie of its own)

    Diagnostics
    Purpose
Allows anonymous call-quality summaries — connection quality, reconnects, browser family and a call-length range — to be sent to this server. Your choice is stored in nook_consent.
    Duration
Reports are deleted after 30 days

On your first visit, a banner asks for your choice. You can Accept all, Reject optional or Customize each category.

Nothing optional is stored before you decide. Until then, and whenever preferences are off, remembered settings live in sessionStorage and disappear when you close the tab, and the detected-language cookie lasts only until you close your browser.

Your choice is kept for 180 days. After that, we ask again.

Changing your choices

You can change your choices at any time in (also linked in the site footer) or in Settings → Privacy & data.

When you turn preferences off, Nook removes the preference cookies and the nook: keys from localStorage straight away.

Browser controls

Your browser can also block or delete cookies and site data. If you block necessary cookies, you won’t be able to sign in, and joining calls as a guest won’t work.

Other websites

Links to other websites, such as messaging service, lead to services with their own cookie policies. Calls connect to the media server the operator has configured; Nook does not set cookies for it.

Changes to this policy

If Nook starts using a new cookie or storage key, this list is updated first. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
