Troubleshooting calls

Fix no audio, echo, a busy camera, reconnecting calls and blocked sound.

Others can’t hear me

  • Check that you’re not muted — the microphone button in the control bar shows a crossed-out mic when you are.
  • Watch the level meter on the pre-join screen or in the device menu. If it doesn’t move when you speak, pick another microphone.
  • Make sure the browser and your operating system allow microphone access (see Devices and permissions).
  • A host may have muted you. Unmute yourself when you’re ready to speak.

I can’t hear anyone

  • Check the speaker or headphone choice in the device menu, and play the test sound.
  • Some browsers block sound from starting on its own. If Nook shows a prompt to turn on sound, select it; otherwise click once anywhere in the call.
  • Check your system volume and that the browser tab isn’t muted.

Echo or feedback

Echo usually means someone’s speakers feed back into their microphone. Headphones fix it best. Keep echo cancellation and noise suppression on in Settings → Devices, and don’t join the same call twice from devices in one room.

Camera is busy or black

  • Close other apps or tabs that use the camera — on Windows, only one app can use it at a time.
  • Unplug and reconnect an external camera, then pick it again in the device menu.
  • Check that a privacy shutter or a camera switch on your laptop isn’t closed.
  • Audio rooms don’t allow cameras, and stage listeners can’t share video. That’s expected.

“Reconnecting…”

When your network drops, Nook keeps you in the call and tries to reconnect automatically; others see a reconnecting indicator on your tile instead of a frozen picture. If it keeps happening:

  • Move closer to your Wi-Fi router or use a cable.
  • Turn your camera off to save bandwidth.
  • Pause large downloads or uploads on the same network.
  • If you were away for a while, rejoin from the invite link.

Screen sharing doesn’t start

Screen sharing needs a desktop browser. On macOS, allow your browser under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording, then restart it. The meeting may also limit sharing to hosts.

The call has no audio or video at all

If Nook says the server has no media server set up, calls on this server run without audio and video: chat, reactions, raised hands and simulated participants still work. The operator needs to configure LiveKit (see Self-hosting).
